TESTIMONIALS

"Hello, this is Louie Vega, I'm very sorry I'm not in town for the event, if I was, I'd be here with all my brother djs for Dj Camacho. I would like to send out my condolences to the Camacho Family. I'd like to say that I'm deeply saddened by the passing of Dave Camacho, he was a great dj who had knowledge on music that not very many could touch. When he dj'd back at the Underground Network parties at Sound Factory Bar, I'd go to the Funk Hut to hear a few jams that he played before I started djing upstairs (we played in the same club) and he would always play tracks I'd never heard before or rare classics I'd learn of from him, and I was heavily influenced to play them because of Camacho. He will always be remembered as a great dj who always had the jams, played them well and most of all a very kind and friendly person with a great sense of humor. I know he will be djing in heaven for all our house & classic heads there. Rest in peace Camacho, we will miss you."

When I first came to New Jersey, I had heard about Camacho for a pretty long time before we actually met. I learned he was an icon, and had a lot a power to acquire unreleased cuts, more than anybody else. I also heard that he had a strong following who loved his classics. After meeting Camacho and some of his family, I realized how cool they really were and that they were always respectful to me. During the latter days, it seemed like whenever or wherever I played in New York or New Jersey he was always there. Anytime I'd see him, it was a reminder to stay soulful and funky. He also had some serious releases on his label. All in all, a great talent, with a famous name, and he will be missed.

I first met David Camacho when Nelson (Butchie) Nieves and I started DJing at Branch Brook Roller Skating Rink. We became friends from the moment we met. He was always in a good mood and a happy person – I remember his smile.

Butchie and I started up a Friday night party at a youth facility called " La Casa De Don Pedro " which happen to be right around the corner from where Camacho lived at the time. By then Camacho and I had become very good friends. He would come to each of our parties to support the event. In 1976 Butchie decided we needed to open our own club and Docks was born. While at Docks, Camacho admitted one day he loved DJing. So, I encouraged him to pursue his passion. Butchie and I spoke and we decided to give Camacho the opportunity to play at the club. Camacho was a natural from the start! Camacho went on to become one of the first traveling DJ's from Newark and was among the top DJ's at his time. Camacho was also quite good at spotting talent early on and generous to a fault with his knowledge and generosity.

Later in his life I began to see Camacho at his home setting and saw him beam whenever you inquired about his pride and joy, his daughters. He was always sharing their achievements - you could tell how proud he was of his kids. Cookie, his wife, was the backbone to the family and with her support Camacho was able truly enjoy doing what he loved, his music and Djing.

I will forever remember Camacho as the young man with a smile for everyone and the talent of an artist.

Love You My Brother R.I.P, Hippie Torrales

  1. Dave Camacho started his djing career in 1970. Playing amongst many other hot clubs at Club Docs, Paradisio, Club Khayyan, Bond International and the Red Parrot. In 1986 Camacho founded the "Wild Pitch" with DJs Greg Day, Nick Jones and Bobby Kondders. Together they wrote history with their vibing parties all over New York.

  2. When thinking about Camacho a lot of THINGS come to mind and make me smile! BUT if I had to pick two things (since there is not enough room here -to name many.. SMILE!) TWO THINGS COME TO MIND... The 1st time he EVER MET my husband RIP BIG LA!) @ Zanzibar right before I was about to perform. He looked at me a 4'11 little woman about 130 lbs *WET* (GOD I MISS THOSE DAYS!) then he looked at my husband A HUGE 6'4 / 280lb man standing next to me! HE GAVE ME this FUNNY LOOK and said "WOW... WHAT A BIG N*GGA, YOUR EITHER SCARED FOR YOUR LIFE AND NEED PROTECTION OR YOUR TRYING TO COMPENSATE FOR YOUR OWN SHORTCOMINGS!" I laughed till I began to CHOKE! The 2nd thing was I USE TO TEASE HIM CAUSE HE ALWAYS HAD AN EMPTY WHITE CASTLE BOX WITH HIM SOMEWHERE...I ASKED HIM .... "WAS WHITE CASTLE PAYING HIM TO EAT THEIR BURGERS ADVERTISING FOR THEM CAUSE YOU ALWAYS HAVE AN EMPLY SAK SOMEWHERE AROUND YOU!" HE would smile and respond.. "NO... BUT I've INVESTED A LOT OF MONEY IN THEM SO I AM ABOUT TO OWN STOCK IN WHITE CASTLE!" MISS YOU BABE. GOD HAS ANOTHER ANGEL BY HIS SIDE! AND THAT MAKES ME HAPPY!

  5. When I remember Camacho, I remember him taking me, a young college girl, to hang out with him at his parties while he spun the folks crazy...he always played the Clark Sisters' hit "HiYa" just to see me cut the fool across the floor...then we would go to White Castle...the last time I recorded with him, we were doing a remake of the Clark Sisters classic, and it never got finished...I miss his big heart and warm hugs...R.I.P. Camacho...I will miss singing for u...love, Jazmina...

He was passionate about the music,a genuine person with a big heart, and a ready smile and I dont think I ever heard him say a bad word about anyone.Even as his health failed his spirit never did.May he Rest in Peace

  8. I owe everything to Camacho for believing me to be a DJ,a nd for giving me my very first chance at being a Producer. Him and Curtis Masters was big supporters of me, when I didn't think I was any good. They both are looking down on me and I shall carry on The Wild Pitch sound Camacho started,a nd always do my best while playing, making, and dancing to House Music........ 9. I grew up with David & his family back in the day (Scudder Homes projects) but lost touch with the family when they moved. Never got to hear David play but from what I hear & from the comments I've read on FB, he was a world class DJ. Last time I spoke with David was at the Zanzibar reunion 2 years ago. I'm so saddened by his unfortunate passing. RIP David and my condolences to his family.

  12. Camacho @ Space in 88 was my first real introduction to how classics and House music should be played. It was complete separation to what was going on in the Tunnel, Palladium and other trendy clubs at the time. Having a radio show on 91.5 fm, it was Camacho, whose music I would mimic to educate myself.

After bonding with him, he along with Greg Daye took a chance and gave me a shot to play at the WORLD with Bobby Konders. The duo then decided to have me as a resident DJ @ Wildpitch. Shortly thereafter with the help of the radio show and college following was I able to land a residency @ The Choice, but it as Camacho who I would faithfully come to hear to educate myself on what the Garage sound was since I never went to the venue.

There would be no Funk Box, Soulgasm, or Libation if it wasn't for WILD PITCH. It became the original Dancers party! When I see the dancers of this scene I automatically think about the party that Camacho started that started a new clubbing generation.

No matter how much I diversified musically, I would always come back to Camacho. The man known to have the hottest butters would wait until 8pm for me and we would go until the next day sharing music.

For 17 years we would exchange music at least once a month. Before the cd's were a phenomenon. We'd record everything from DAT to cassette and play it out for the massive crowds on a Saturday and that would be our high.

He only wanted what's best for anybody that pushed soulful music. He believed in me so much that he introduced me to his agent JP Firman.
I would have never gone to the UK if not for him and he hooked up many a DJ during the time when work was drying up for DJ's not getting work in New York.

We all played the same curcit of gigs and many places overseas but he was the pioneer that made alot of those original connections.

It was nothing for him to go from the UK to Italy then Switzerland and Asia, rocking crowds all the way through.

Camacho paved the way for other DJs from the states to make their names. Whenever he was done with a venue promoters would lick their chops looking for the next American with that soulful sound.

It was Camacho that broke many of the careers of Artists (Think Alyus- Follow Me, Smack Production, or Blaze).

Whenever a DJ got stuck and was looking for newest music to play it was normal to run to Butterz man.

The seeds he planted in the DJ's he helped spawn one way or the other will live on.

I celebrate him for everything he is and what he has left behind. He's got some musical children that will push this music forward. The soulful sound I found all the way in 88 is still living in me because of him.

The last gift he gave me when I was on the electronic scene was Franks Lounge. I had never really been to the venue until I heard him play there. It was because of him that I play there monthly now.

A small space where everybody collectively loves the music I knew he loved.

Its his music that makes him live in me.

He's resting in Peace but his music is still making noise on earth.

To all and everyone who has ever come to hear me play and to all the DJs who have been there to help me make things work, I just have to say that without you there would be no me. Thank You! Sincerely, -DJ Camacho

  15. Damn good tribute Disciple, this is Frank Thomas. I will keep it short. Camacho was always smiling, always seeing the good in a situation and always seeing the good in us even when we weren't. Being asked to join the Wild Pitch crew as a teen promoter means so much more to me now (20 years later) than it did back then. Without question it was the greatest gypsy party of its time and a blueprint for many future parties, but best thing was that Camacho clearly loved giving as a haven, a sanctum......wish I had known that back then the way I do now.

    Thank you Big Brother.

  16. DJ Camacho is a Legend and we should celebrate his life and his contribution to music as a whole. So PLEASE come out and celebrate this positive brother and show his family that we do care and don't forget to DONATE, DONATE, DONATE. The event is free. Thank you to Vicki Martin for putting the word out there.

Nelson Paradise Roman - I met Camacho in 1990 when I was VP/A&R Director of Big Beat Records. I gave him the first test pressing of 'Sweat' by Jay Williams and since then we have always connected. He was a great spirit and I enjoyed sharing music with him. I played for Wildpitch (promoted by Greg Daye)with Camacho and we always goofed about the music being played in certain clubs. May he rest in peace and God bless the family. I plan on attending the event so we can all celebrate his life together...
